I lived twenty years in Milan and I was sure I will stay there forever, the studio, the friends, the aperitivo on Thursday. Then my mother moved to Paphos with her sister in 2023 and every time I visit her I stay some days longer than I planned.

This summer I decided. I will buy a small apartment in Paphos, near to my mother but not in the same building, this is very important for both of us.

I work from home, so I need one room with good light for the desk and a balcony for the evening. For now I have saved six flats from https://tranio.com/cyprus/paphos/ in a folder on my phone and my mother already has an opinion on all of them.

In October I go for ten days to see them. My sister says I am crazy to leave Milan. Maybe, but in Paphos in November…

After a dozen viewings in Dubai Marina I learned to ignore the wide shot of the living room entirely. The frame that told me something was the one taken from the balcony looking sideways, along the face of the building, because it shows how close the next tower stands and how much sky you actually keep. After three months of looking at apartments in Bangkok I could tell you which photograph in a set was doing the selling, and it was never the sunset. What decided things for us was a plain frame of the corridor outside the front door, taken at eye level in the middle of the day. It showed the light, the neighbours' doors and how wide the walkway was, and it told us more than any wide-angle of the living room ever did.
